Welcome

A very warm welcome. Thank you for visiting my site.

My name is Dr Harsha Kariyawasam. I am a NHS Consultant since 2008 with particular expertise in the areas of Allergy Medicine, Nose-Sinus Disease and Complex Asthma. I am one of the few specialists in the UK that have trained in both the upper and lower airway together, allowing me to manage diseases of the nose-sinus-lung as one system. I am based for my NHS work at the Royal National Throat Nose Ear Hospital and University College London Hospital (UCLH). This is the UK national centre for complex sinonasal disease and is of international standing. I was Head of Department 2012-2017 and continue to be Lead Physician for Medical Rhinology. I was also Senior Consultant for complex asthma at UCLH until August 2017. I work within a team structure as this ensures patient safety and excellent clinical outcomes.

My expert areas are

  • Allergy Medicine - general allergy, food allergy, drug allergy, immunotherapy, anaphylaxis, urticaria and angioedema
  • Nasal and Sinus Disease- rhinitis including hayfever, sinusitis, infection, nasal polyps, problems of the nose and sinus system
  • Complex asthma
  • Cough
  • Use of vaccines and biologics in allergic disease

Clinical Excellence

I enjoy what I do and am committed to do my best for patients. I therefore work hard, am driven to achieve excellence, lead by example, celebrate teaching and research. In recognition of my clinical and management achievements as Head of Department 2012-2017, I was awarded a highly competitive and prestigious Clinical Excellence Award by University College London Hospital in 2017. The award also recognised the outstanding research and teaching portfolio contributions I have made at University College London Medical School as a Senior Lecturer.

My independently assessed patient experience feedback mean score at GMC revalidation was 90/100 with 100% willing to recommend me to friends and family. Colleague and trainee feedback score was 92/100 for knowledge, skills and performance along with 94/100 for safety and quality of my service. My reputation for clinical excellence has led me to be an invited advisor in Allergy to the Civil Aviation Authority UK and the key charity AllergyUK.

Allergic diseases and problems of the nose-sinus system are complex, lead to severe symptoms and have a devastating effect on the lives of people afflicted. There is still so much work to be done with research to understand the disease and come up with better treatments and one day we hope cures. I am therefore also a busy researcher and teacher.

On the next few pages you will find more information about what I do and offer, background of my clinical and research training, introduction to allergic and sinonasal disease and details of where I practice. Exact diagnosis and evidence based best care, whereby my patients are fully trained to eventually self-manage their care is the cornerstone of my clinical approach. My private practice fully reflects my busy NHS service where my team and I always endeavour to provide the utmost excellence in every aspect of our work. We welcome all feedback to ensure we are doing our best.
